HP Acquires Key AI Assets from Humane for $116 Million, Signaling a Bold Leap into the Future of AI-Integrated Devices

In a strategic move poised to redefine the landscape of personal computing and printing, HP has announced the acquisition of key assets from AI startup Humane for a sum of $116 million. 

 

The deal, expected to close by the end of February 2025, encompasses Humane’s comprehensive software platform, a robust portfolio of over 300 patents, and the integration of Humane’s talented engineering team into HP's newly established AI innovation lab, known as HP IQ. 

 

This acquisition underscores HP's commitment to embedding advanced AI solutions into its diverse range of products, from personal computers to printers and collaborative work technologies.

 

The Rise and Fall of Humane: A Vision of AI Beyond the Screen

Humane, founded in 2019 by former Apple luminaries Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, emerged with a compelling vision: to seamlessly integrate AI into the fabric of everyday life, liberating individuals from the confines of smartphone screens. 

 

The company's flagship product, the AI Pin, embodied this ambition. Envisioned as a screen-less, wearable assistant, the AI Pin boasted a camera, voice command capabilities, and the innovative ability to project information onto the user's hand via a laser-based display.

 

However, despite initial fanfare and anticipation, the AI Pin encountered significant hurdles following its launch. Critics pointed to limitations in functionality, issues with overheating, and inconsistent AI performance, with the device making notable errors even during its official presentation. 

 

The tide turned dramatically with a scathing review from a prominent tech influencer who dubbed it "the worst product I've ever reviewed." This negative feedback amplified concerns and contributed to a sharp decline in consumer interest.

 

Sales data further confirmed the AI Pin's struggles. Between May and August 2024, return rates surpassed sales, exacerbating the company's financial difficulties and ultimately leading to the acquisition by HP.

 

The End of the Line for the AI Pin

As part of the acquisition agreement, HP has no plans to continue the development, production, or support of the AI Pin. Online services powering the device will be discontinued on February 28, 2025, effectively rendering the AI Pin obsolete. Customers who purchased the device after November 15, 2024, will be eligible to receive a refund. 

 

The AI Pin was initially priced at $499, with a supplementary subscription fee required to access its AI-powered features.

While HP's acquisition marks the end of the road for Humane's ambitious AI Pin, it simultaneously represents a bold step forward for HP as it seeks to infuse AI into the core of its product strategy.
